Blood will have blood Tis better thee without than he within Will all Neptune's Ocean wash this blood clean from my hand? Make thick my Blood Will my hands ne'er be clean? |
William Shakespeare, a big fan of blood used this aspect several times inside his play Macbeth. Macbeth commits the crime of murder, the King’s murder, a crime which he will not forget anytime soon. The blood of King Duncan spilt has become a symbol of their guilt which he and his wife Lady Macbeth cannot get rid from their minds, Macbeth at the first stage of going mad asks “Will all Neptune’s Ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?” In Shakespeare’s time the church was a major influence to the people, baptism is a practice used to clear one of their sins, and this quote is a close reference to that practice. But Macbeth isn’t the only one with a diseased conscience by the end of the play Lady Macbeth sleepwalks trying to rub off imaginary blood “will my hands ne’er be clean?”, she goes so mad beyond the point of return that she takes her life. Blood imagery has been commonly used inside Macbeth mainly to portray the madness, hallucination that the evil couple are facing.
